Federal judge says Coast Guard officer accused of terror attack plot will be released from detention

(CNN)A federal judge in Maryland said Thursday that Christopher Hasson, a Coast Guard lieutenant accused of plotting a domestic terror attack, will be released from detention. “He’s got to have a whole lot of supervision,” Day said. “Somebody who’s got eyes and ears on him like nobody’s business.” Prosecutors say Hasson is a white supremacist who had a hit list that included prominent Democratic politicians as well as several journalists from CNN and MSNBC. Hasson conducted an internet search for “are Supreme Court justices protected” before searching for the home addresses of two unnamed justices, court documents revealed. The documents say Hasson espoused extremist and white supremacist views, and searched online for the “best” gun with which to kill African …

Albany, NY, is coping with a ransomware attack

(CNN)When Albany, New York, patrolman Gregory McGee went to work last Sunday morning, he got the unpleasant news that hackers had rendered many of the internet-connected tools he relied on for work inoperable. The culprit was the City of Albany getting infected last Saturday with ransomware, in which malicious software spreads across a network, rendering computers inaccessible, encrypting their files and demanding a fee to go away. The city had recently taken over management of most of the police department’s networks. City Hall itself experienced a number of municipal service interruptions, too. Albany residents were told to go elsewhere to get birth certificates, death certificates or marriage licenses. Some residents complain that building and development applications haven’t been available via …

Muellers report is a warning and Britain wont listen | Carole Cadwalladr

The evidence of Russian interference in the US election has profound consequences for the UK and for democracy Last Sunday, the biggest ever donor in British political history was celebrating. The man who is currently supporting a hard Brexit campaign for Britain to leave the European Union with no deal and who is Arron Banks, the Bristol-based businessman who funded Nigel Farages Leave.EU campaign, had seen the first news reports of the special counsel Robert Muellers investigation into possible collusion between Donald Trump and the Russian government and he was cockahoop. he added: No Russian collusion, Im waiting for the NNCA_UK [sic National Crime Agency] decision and trust me, you are top of list to sue! 5Gs Potential Health Hazard, Zucks Deleted Posts, and More News

Tech news you can use, in two minutes or less: 5G: Cool for your cellphone, terrible for your health? 5G, the cell phone network that promises to exponentially increase data speeds for all, might help load a web page faster but could also hurt your health. It turns out your sweat glands act kind of like antennas in response to the high frequency waves planned to be used in the service, and funding for research on the health effects is relatively slim. 5G is still in its infancy in the US though, so here's to hoping research about its potential health hazards catch up with the technology itself. Facebook had a hell of a weekend Over the weekend, Facebook poked …

Elizabeth Warren Fires a Warning Shot at Big Tech

The tech industry is already under siege by the press, the public, and regulators around the world. But on Friday, Democratic presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren lobbed a bomb onto that battlefield, designed to crack the fortresses that have formed around tech monopolies like Google, Facebook, and Amazon. In a Medium post, the US senator from Massachusetts laid out her presidential platform for breaking up these big tech companies, unwinding their past mergers, and preventing giant platforms like Amazon from also selling their own products on those platforms, potentially stifling competition. "As these companies have grown larger and more powerful, they have used their resources and control over the way we use the Internet to squash small businesses and innovation, and …

Washington Post: Kellyanne Conway’s husband tweets Trump criticisms ‘so I don’t end up screaming at her’

(CNN)Conservative lawyer George Conway said Tuesday that his recent tweets slamming President Donald Trump’s mental health were a way to let off steam and keep from arguing with his wife, senior presidential adviser Kellyanne Conway, The Washington Post reported. “No one was prouder than I was that she was able to elect this man President despite his obvious flaws,” he added. Conway had tweeted several times over the weekend questioning the President’s mental health, including posting photos of the description of narcissistic personality disorder and antisocial personality disorder from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Aides to the President had previously dissuaded him from going after Conway on Twitter, reasoning that it would empower him and draw needless …

Steele says he used unverified information to support details about web company in dossier

(CNN)A newly released snippet of a deposition with the ex-British spy behind the Trump-Russia dossier describes some of the steps he took to verify information he collected for it in 2016, including pulling from a user-generated citizen journalism initiative by CNN, iReport, which no longer operates. Steele testified that he used a 2009 article from the crowdsourced news site CNN iReport, for instance, to check information he learned about Webzilla, one of the three related entities that had sued BuzzFeed for defamation. BuzzFeed published the dossier in full — explaining they hadn’t verified it — on January 10, 2017, after CNN reported that President Barack Obama and President-elect Donald Trump had been briefed about it. When asked if he had …

Unsealed documents shed new light on efforts to verify Trump-Russia dossier

(CNN)Documents unsealed this week lend credence to a theory about Russian election meddling that was first put forward in the Trump-Russia dossier, however they do not corroborate the more explosive claims that the Trump campaign colluded with the Kremlin in the 2016 campaign. The effort by BuzzFeed to prove an aspect of the dossier to defend itself in court sheds new light on the accuracy of Steele’s finds on the nature of Russia’s attempts to meddle in the 2016 election. The report was funded by Democrats seeking to uncover information about then-Republican candidate Donald Trump. Details of the report The FTI report concluded that one of the hyperlinks the Russians designed to trick Hillary Clinton’s campaign chairman John Podesta into …

The fight over Amazon is the fight for the future of the Democratic Party

(CNN)It was Democrats who brought Amazon to New York City, and it was Democrats who chased it away. The tension can be seen not only in the smacking New York Democrats received after wooing Amazon, but also in the skepticism among party elders like Nancy Pelosi toward the expansive Green New Deal proposal, also pushed by Ocasio-Cortez — and now broadly endorsed by most of the party’s presidential contenders. This round started with the powerful Democratic governor and mayor of New York who put aside their rivalry to welcome Amazon to the city. Cuomo, an old guard Democrat, was smarting on Thursday. “A small group politicians put their own narrow political interests above their community … the state’s economic future …

Anthony Weiner has been released from federal prison

(CNN)Anthony Weiner has been released from federal prison and is serving out the rest of his sentence in a halfway house, records show. The Bureau of Prisons says residential re-entry centers are designed to reduce the chances that inmates will relapse into criminal behavior and are intended to provide assistance to inmates nearing release. CNN has reached out to the Brooklyn facility where Weiner was transferred but they declined to comment. In October, Weiner was granted a release date three months earlier than the initially scheduled date of August 2019 due to good behavior. The ex-congressman is set for a full release on May 14 this year. In addition to his prison sentence, Weiner is also subject to three years …

Pro-Russian Twitter account used non-public material from Mueller’s team in effort to discredit Russia probe

Washington (CNN)The Justice Department alleged Wednesday that Russia has continued pushing online disinformation to discredit the American government, after a pro-Russian Twitter account spread confidential information from a criminal case that special counsel Robert Mueller’s team brought against a Russian company for social media conspiracy. More than a thousand of those documents were part of the case’s evidence collection, and were listed online under labels and folders known only to those involved in the case, the prosecutors said. Other documents published online and mixed in with the real evidence were “junk material,” prosecutors said. Clinton, Nixon reports offer starkly different models for Mueller

(CNN)As special counsel Robert Mueller prepares a final report on his investigation of Russia’s interference in the 2016 election and possible Trump campaign complicity, two historic presidential inquiries offer distinct — and clashing — models. Nixon resigned before he could be impeached. Clinton was impeached but acquitted by the Senate. Today, as Mueller reportedly nears the end of the Russia probe tracing to 2016, these two historic episodes suggest possible approaches for a final report but also point to differences for the current multi-year probe hanging over the Trump presidency. Unlike with the work of Jaworski and Starr, Mueller is operating under a statute that requires he submit a confidential report directly to the attorney general, who has discretion on …
