The humble billboard is having a moment

They were talking about how tweets (in particular one of David Cameron’s) can get lost amid the noise of the internet. They wondered: “Can we make sure it wasn’t forgotten about?” Four months on, the group has hired more than 240 billboards across the UK, having raised over £340,000. The posters feature old tweets or quotes from politicians who have been involved in the Brexit process. Why I Stopped Shaving My Face And Embraced Life As A Bearded Woman

I first started growing facial hair when I was 12, about two years after I began menstruating. I was taken to Boston Children’s Hospital, where I was diagnosed with PCOS, or polycystic ovarian syndrome. When I was diagnosed, I basically had all of the symptoms they were looking for except for multiple ovarian cysts. As an adult, a spinal X-ray showed I have a dermoid cyst, which has teeth inside of it. These types of cysts are benign and basically harmless unless they grow large enough to twist and rupture. Some believe they are the remains of twins that were absorbed in utero. It didn’t take long for my mother to subject me to a variety of hair removal methods. …

UK to tech execs: Clean up your platforms or face ‘substantial’ fines

London (CNN Business)Tech executives could be hit with substantial fines and criminal penalties under new rules proposed by the UK government that aim to make the internet safe for children and other vulnerable groups. Europe has taken a much more robust approach to tech regulation than the United States, confronting industry giants over competition issues, data protection, privacy and tax. Calls for stricter regulation have increased recently in the United Kingdom after social media was blamed for the suicide of a British teenager and Facebook failed to stop the live broadcast of a mass killing in New Zealand. “For too long these companies have not done enough to protect users, especially children and young people, from harmful content,” Prime Minister …

The speech Donald Trump will never give

(CNN)My fellow Americans. First, there were the efforts by the Kremlin-linked Internet Research Agency to manipulate social media to promote my campaign and denigrate that of my opponent, Hillary Clinton. Millions of Americans were potentially manipulated by this campaign, which even extended to the organization of actual political rallies here in the United States. Second, it’s appalling that the Russian military intelligence agency GRU and its unit 26165 hacked into the Democratic National Committee and stole many thousands of emails. Third, it’s worrisome that these stolen emails would then be given to WikiLeaks — no friend of the United States –and that those emails were selectively released at times when they could most influence the American political process. Fourth, it’s …

Albany, NY, is coping with a ransomware attack

(CNN)When Albany, New York, patrolman Gregory McGee went to work last Sunday morning, he got the unpleasant news that hackers had rendered many of the internet-connected tools he relied on for work inoperable. The culprit was the City of Albany getting infected last Saturday with ransomware, in which malicious software spreads across a network, rendering computers inaccessible, encrypting their files and demanding a fee to go away. The city had recently taken over management of most of the police department’s networks. City Hall itself experienced a number of municipal service interruptions, too. Albany residents were told to go elsewhere to get birth certificates, death certificates or marriage licenses. Some residents complain that building and development applications haven’t been available via …

Here’s What To Look For In The Mueller Report

Mueller’s report is one of the most highly anticipated documents in American history. Political journalists are treating Thursday morning like it’s election night. The Justice Department has taken precautions to prevent its website from crashing. Publishers plan to rush copies of the report to print, and NBC’s Seth Meyers has announced an extended 90-minute version of his comedy show just to make jokes about it. Attorney General William Barr, working in counsel with Mueller, will release a redacted version of the report that leaves out grand jury material, intelligence information that might reveal sources and methods, information that may affect ongoing investigations and information that would “infringe on the personal privacy and reputational interests of peripheral third parties.” Reuters Special …

Why China loves Tom Hiddleston’s ‘creepy’ ad

It’s filmed from the perspective of Hiddleston’s partner sitting at the table while he, decked in an apron, makes a healthy breakfast for her. He then says in Chinese 还有你的善存, which can be translated as “here’s your Centrum”, or “don’t forget your Centrum”. The Avengers’ star has more than 600,000 followers on the popular Chinese social media platform, which is not a huge amount given some Chinese stars have Weibo fan counts in the millions.
