How Do Alligators Survive In Icy Swamps? They Freeze In Just The Right Position

Alligators aren’t meant to survive winter temperatures, but what happens when they’re faced with such extreme conditions? They freeze, of course. For the second year in a row, a cold snap blowing through the 65-acre Shallotte River Swamp Park in North Carolina forced the preserve’s 18 rescued gators to partake in some super odd behavior. What at first appeared to be teeth-baring Cypress trees poking through the ice was later revealed to be an adapted survival trait. “I was like, holy crap, should I try to get them out of there?” swamp manager George Howard told The Washington Post at the time. The survival mechanism first captured the attention of the Internet around this time last year, when a similar video …

Media playback is unsupported on your device Media captionMolly Russell’s father told the BBC he believed Instagram had ‘helped kill my daughter’ Harmful suicide and self-harm content online “has the effect of grooming people to take their own lives”, the suicide prevention minister has said. Jackie Doyle-Price has told the BBC that social media companies must “step up” to protect vulnerable users. It comes after links were made between the suicide of teenager Molly Russell and her exposure to harmful content. According to the Daily Mail, Ms James will promise to crack down on many of the social media platforms that have “fallen …

Officials say this law is about online safety. Experts say it’s a Trojan horse for internet censorship

(CNN)The men passed the link between them, sharing it over email and instant messages. It was to a public Dropbox folder, containing hundreds of nude and intimate images of women, mostly students at the Fiji campus of the University of the South Pacific. In May 2018, after an unusually short two-month public consultation, the bill was passed into law, becoming the Online Safety Act 2018. Only government lawmakers voted in favor of the new law, with every opposition lawmaker voting against it. Under the new law, someone who “posts an electronic communication where posting the electronic communication causes harm to the individual” could be liable to a fine of $9,400 and up to five years in prison. While supporters of …

Fox Business’ Lou Dobbs Turns On Trump: Pelosi Just Whipped Him

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has “just whipped the President of the United States,” the “Lou Dobbs Tonight” host told his guests, former acting ICE director Thomas Homan and former Trump aide Sebastian Gorka. “It will be perceived as such on every television monitor and screen in the country,” he added. “And to deny it is to try to escape from reality. And that, we ain’t going to do here.” Download Original Article : HERE ; This post was curated & posted using : RealSpecific

China just quietly wrote off a chunk of Cameroon’s debt. Why the secrecy?

(CNN)When top Chinese diplomat Yang Jiechi met Cameroon President Paul Biya in the capital Yaounde last month and wrote off a chunk of the African country’s debt, the deal very nearly went unnoticed. But while the news report was wrong, its release did force the Chinese government to speak publicly about what type of deal had been reached. Last week, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying told CNN: “China agreed to waive the interest-free inter-governmental debt that Cameroon had not paid back by the end of 2018.” That debt was worth $78.4 million. Cameroon’s total debt is 5.8 trillion Central African CFA francs ($10 billion), about a third of which is owed to China, according to the International Monetary Fund. …

Twitter Just Found Out That Megabats Exist And The Reactions Are Hilarious

Everyone knows what a bat is. Those little flying fuzzballs with bizarre faces that hang upside down by their feet. But it seems many people aren’t aware that bats can range in size from the minute to the massive, with one family of bats, known as the “megabats”, having wingspans of up to 1.7 meters (5.6 feet). Just recently, a Twitter user named David, aka @VeganGenesis, brought megabats to the attention of the Internet. –  Yep, they’re really big. – – Some people were really, really terrified.  – – – – With many making an obvious comparison.  – – But if you’re imagining these bats as blood-sucking monsters, think again. Various users were relieved to find out that these guys are harmless …

Mexican Enterprise Presents Simple, But Genius Sand Blinds

From now on you’ll be able to announce that the sands of time are running out without sounding too dramatic. And that is thanks to Mexican architecture company Álvaro Ramírez + Arquitectos. The people behind the idea of this creation might be fans of board games, Alias, in particular, since the idea of his design is based on an hourglass. Despite how closer-to-nature it looks and all the meditational vibes it creates, the final result was questioned by observant internet users. Check it out, would you want to have something like it in your place? Image credits:

61st Annual Grammys Recap: What You Missed Betches

Overall, this recap was a struggle—and I don’t just mean because my hangover is currently setting in at 1:15am. It’s because if you’ve read any one of my articles or recaps, you know that I’m very good at criticism. Shitting on things is like my second language (see: Kylie Jenner, Vanderpump Rules, the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, guys who try to hit on me and end up on my IG stories, etc.). What’s not so easy? Recounting a television event that, for the most part, was very good. The 61st annual Grammys were honestly enjoyable—for the first two hours, anyway. After that it felt like what I imagine purgatory feels like, though I may have preferred burning alive. In all …

‘You’s Joe Is Toxic And CrazyBut He’s Also What I’d Want In A Man Betches

You,Youspend 10 hours in a dark room with my Netflix accountIf you’re not familiar with the premise, here’s the deal: Joe (aka Penn Badgley aka Dan Humphrey) is a hipster bookstore owner by day, unhinged (but somehow loveable??) stalker by night. He’s set his sights on the human incarnation of the reason people think white girls are insufferable: Guinevere Beck aka “Beck.” Beck is a struggling MFA student just trying to make it big as a poet (lol) and also still party with her rich girlfriends and be able to afford her massive, one bedroom apartment in “the village” (LOL). I’m halfway through the show and I can’t decide what I find more problematic: that Beck thinks she will make …

NANCY SCORES!: Trump Is No.1 Loser In Jim Carreys Soccer Cartoon

The actor-comedian commented on President Donald Trump’s backing down from his call for Congress to pay for a U.S.-Mexico border wall ― and his temporary reopening of the federal government ― with this cartoon: “NANCY SCORES!” he captioned the image, which depicted Trump as a soccer goalkeeper who’s just conceded a goal to unseen House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.). Stone denies the allegations. “Dresses like a Batman villain, wears a tattoo of the last worst scumbag (Nixon) ever to soil the Oval Office,” wrote Carrey, whose politically charged artwork HuffPost continues to write about on an almost weekly basis. UK ‘could ban’ social media over suicide images

Media playback is unsupported on your device Media captionAfter Molly Russell took her own life, her family discovered distressing material about suicide on her Instagram account Social media firms could be banned if they fail to remove harmful content, the health secretary has warned. Speaking on the BBC’s Andrew Marr show, Matt Hancock said: “If we think they need to do things they are refusing to do, then we can and we must legislate.” But he added: “It’s not where I’d like to end up.” The minister earlier called on social media giants to “purge” material promoting self-harm and suicide in the wake of links to a teenager’s suicide. Molly Russell, 14, took her own life in 2017 after viewing …

FOX NEWS FIRST: Trump skeptical about future wall deal as possibility of another shutdown looms

On Friday, Trump signed a short-term spending bill reopening the government and ending the 35-day shutdown without any funding for his long-promised border barrier, a reversal from last month when he refused to sign any funding legislation that did not provide wall money. Acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney strongly suggested on “Fox News Sunday” that Trump will construct a border wall using his emergency powers if Congress cannot agree on a compromise to fund the construction in the next three weeks. Michael Goodwin: President Trump is down, but not out Rep. Michael Waltz: ‘Massive lack of trust’ that Dems will negotiate Rep. What He Wants For Valentine’s Day This Year Betches

Oh god. Oh no. It’s here. Cthulhu Valentine’s Day has arisen from its syrup-coated Hallmark basement lair to once again assault our eyeballs with pink and red flowers, crappy candy, balloons, and mass-produced stuffed animals painstakingly stitched together by child slaves. This day of sappy Instagram captions, overcrowded restaurants, lackluster sex, and general disappointment is almost upon us. If you, like many halves of whole couples, are, for some reason, looking forward to the idea of this made-up holiday, congratulations and good luck. Shopping for men during Valentine’s Day is about as easy as pretending to be excited about anything after age 30. I’m not bitter, you’re bitter. “How am I supposed to figure out what he wants for Valentine’s Day??!” – Things I …

Childish Gambino Takes Home Multiple Grammys For ‘This Is America’ Song, Video

Childish Gambino claimed the This Is Amertook the internet by storm in May with the visually striking, heavily allusive video, which took on topics like gun violence and black oppression in America. The video, filmed in a warehouse, featured Glover performing African dance moves alongside actor and musician Calvin the Second (who many viewers thought initially was the father of Trayvon Martin) and a choir. The choir scene appeared to be a reference to the 2015 mass shooting at a church in Charleston, South Carolina, where a white supremacist gunman killed nine black churchgoers. Glover’s Grammys for Best Music Video ― alongside video director Hiro Murai and producers Ibra Ake, Jason Cole and Fam Rothstein ― and Best Rap/Sung Performance were awarded …

The Game Of Thrones Season 8 Teaser Is Here Betches

HBO dropped the Game of Thrones season 8 teaser trailer this past Sunday, officially kicking off three things: 1. The countdown to the premiere of the final season *muffled sobs* on April 14th 2. The inception of hundreds of thousands of fan theories about what every single second of this 1:44 video means. 3. My very own stress dreams about this show ending. Reddit has not slept since Sunday night. The footage of Jon, Sansa, and Arya slowly walking through the Winterfell crypts as dialogue from seasons past plays eerily overhead has taken the GOT world by storm. Sansa Sophie Turner. Alas, there were no clues to the show but like, wow. Good for Sansa. So what can this trailer …

A salesman tried to dupe Twain. His response? A turn-of-the-century burn of the century.

via The Library of Congress/Wikimedia Commons Prostitution may be the “world’s oldest profession,” but quackery can’t be too far behind. In the 19th century, American medical doctors began to take a scientific approach to practicing medicine, but it didn’t stop the growing number of con artists pushing fake medical cures, elixirs, tonics, and serums across the countryside. These traveling sales people would set up tents and make fire-and-brimstone speeches touting the unbelievable benefits of their products that were said to cure everything from tuberculosis to baldness. These displays were often accompanied by confidence tricks and fake testimonials. via Carol M. Highsmith/Wikimedia commons By the time the people who bought the medicine realized it was fake, the con artists were off …
