Measles Outbreak Traced To Father Who Admits Not Vaccinating Kids Due To Autism “Concerns”

Vancouver is facing a measles outbreak at the moment, with nine cases confirmed just this month. The outbreak appears to be centered on schools in the city, with several cases being traced back to French-language schools in the area. One man, Emmanuel Bilodeau, believes his son may be the cause of the outbreak. He told CBC News that his son, who he chose not to have vaccinated, contracted measles during a holiday to Vietnam earlier in the year, before bringing it back to Canada. Here, it spread around two schools that share a bus company.  Bilodeau says that he hadn’t vaccinated any of his three children, due to concerns that vaccines cause autism (which they don’t). The other two children became infected with …

How To Get Vaccinated Without Your Parent’s Permission

A vaccination can save your life. Simple as. But a number of young people are being denied the opportunity of being immunized because of their parent’s hostility towards vaccinations. While the “anti-vax movement” remains totally discredited by science, there has been a hugely damaging resurgence of these ideas in the age of social media. Just recently, a Twitter thread highlighted how teens in the US are now searching for legal advice on Reddit because they want to be immunized against deadly diseases, but their parents won’t provide them with their consent. Like any medical treatment, receiving a vaccine should only be undertaken if the patient has a full understanding of the procedure. Many teenagers around the world feel like they are …

17 small, but significant, lifestyle changes that help people with anxiety.

While it’s easy — and understandable — to roll your eyes when someone offers a “miracle cure” for your anxiety (Yes! I have tried yoga! Thanks for asking!!), it’s also important to acknowledge this truth: There are day-to-day changes you can make that might help you manage your anxiety. We’re not talking about a miracle cure. We’re not saying breathing on a mat will make your problems go away. It’s just important to remember while you’re rolling your eyes that you’re not helpless in this fight. While something that worked for one person might not work for you, that doesn’t mean nothing works for you — or that daily, destructive anxiety is inevitable. Of course, that being said, anxiety will …

This Guy Who Scammed His Friends & Family Out Of $750K Is The New Billy McFarland Betches

It’s almost Super Bowl Sunday, and we all know what that means. For most of America, it’s time to throw on your favorite jersey, scream at your TV, and eat your body weight in wings for a few hours. For Georgia businessman Ketan Shah, however, it’s time to pull off a months-long Super Bowl scam, hustling friends and family out of $750K for Super Bowl tickets, and then skipping town. (Hmm, what’s that? A well-to-do businessman taking money from people who trust him for an experience he can’t deliver? Where on earth have we heard that before?) According to WSBTV2 in Atlanta, Shah owns a digital printing shop and “sits on numerous community boards” in Gwinnett County. He had a “squeaky-clean” …

5 reasons to ‘get smart’ about your thermostat

What else belongs in a smart home? Here for 11 smart devices you never knew about before now. What makes a smart thermostat “smart?” Let’s start at the beginning. Set the temperature from anywhere Traditional thermostats work great, but only if you’re around to adjust them. Some thermostats can be programmed, but if you couldn’t figure out a VCR, you may struggle with this function, and you may forget to modify those settings as the seasons change. The main selling point of any smart device is internet connectivity, which means you can change the thermostat’s settings from practically anywhere. You can use your thermostat’s mobile app, or a web browser, or even a virtual assistant like Amazon Alexa or Google …

People Post Heartwarming Tributes To NASAs Rover Opportunity Which Stopped Working After 15 Years On Mars

Unfortunately, all good things eventually come to an end, as Nelly Furtado famously declared. Today we say goodbye to one of the biggest leaps in human history. We bid a farewell to NASA’s Opportunity rover, abandoned and alone around 140 million miles (225 million kilometers) away from our planet. White House announces 51 judicial picks, including two for liberal Ninth Circuit

The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco has long drawn the ire of President Trump, who has called it “disgraceful.” (AP) In an op-ed this week in The Washington Post entitled “Anti-Catholic bigotry is alive in the U.S. Senate,” columnist  Michael Gerson wrote that questions like the ones from Harris and Hirono were inappropriate and “scare the hell out of vast sections of the country.” Missing from the list were three conservative judges the White House has said it will install on the Ninth Circuit without seeking what’s known as a blue slip,” or an opinion, from California senators. In a snub to California Democratic Sens. Dianne Feinstein and Harris, the White House announced in October Trump had nominated Patrick …

Here’s Why Kylie Calling Travis Her Husband Doesn’t Mean Anything Betches

These days, it seems more and more common for celebrities to secretly get married. With the obvious exception of Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra’s Indian extravaganza (with a heavy emphasis on extra), lots of big couples have been keeping things low-key. Cardi and Offset did it, Hailey and Justin did it, and now the latest married couple might be… Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott? Or maybe not. Kylie has a history of calling Travis her husband, so she’s not always the most reliable source of information. Every time Kylie calls Travis some variation of “hubby”, the internet collectively freaks out. This is one such time. On Tuesday, Kylie posted this picture of herself on Instagram. It’s a pretty typical thirst …

Clinton, Nixon reports offer starkly different models for Mueller

(CNN)As special counsel Robert Mueller prepares a final report on his investigation of Russia’s interference in the 2016 election and possible Trump campaign complicity, two historic presidential inquiries offer distinct — and clashing — models. Nixon resigned before he could be impeached. Clinton was impeached but acquitted by the Senate. Today, as Mueller reportedly nears the end of the Russia probe tracing to 2016, these two historic episodes suggest possible approaches for a final report but also point to differences for the current multi-year probe hanging over the Trump presidency. Unlike with the work of Jaworski and Starr, Mueller is operating under a statute that requires he submit a confidential report directly to the attorney general, who has discretion on …

Cuba opens its first new church since the revolution 60 years ago

Sandino, Cuba (CNN)Parishioners wiped away tears and gave thanks to God as the first Roman Catholic church built since the 1959 Cuban revolution opened its doors on Saturday. But after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Fidel Castro tried to break the isolation enveloping Cuba by inviting Pope John Paul II to the island. Christmas was restored as a holiday in Cuba and slowly people of faith said they no longer feared worshiping openly. In 2014, then Cuban President Raul Castro publicly thanked Pope Francis for aiding the secret negotiations that led to the restoration of diplomatic ties with the United States. Shortly thereafter, work began on building the church in Sandino. Nearly $100,000 for the new structure …

Google, Amazon seek foothold in electricity as home automation grows

While the energy ambitions of tech companies are currently limited, some executives anticipate a future where solar panels, battery storage and even electric vehicles all become part of a smart-home ecosystem. Under that scenario, any company that controls the software and systems that deliver energy could gain a formidable market position, according to executives and consultants. JEFF BEZOS GIVES A PITIFUL AMOUNT OF HIS $160B FORTUNE TO CHARITY “In 10 or 20 years, the dominant retail electric provider in the United States is going to be Amazon or Google,” said David Crane, the former chief executive of NRG Energy Inc., who said he isn’t involved in discussions with the companies. “They can provide lower cost and better service.” Home-energy management is a battleground …

‘Internet of things’ or ‘vulnerability of everything’? Japan will hack its own citizens to find out

(CNN)Children playing in a middle school gym in Indonesia; a man getting ready for bed in a Moscow apartment; an Australian family coming and going from their garage; and a woman feeding her cat in Japan. What is a DDOS attack? Network down For years, hackers have used so-called “botnets” — collections of compromised devices — to send spam emails, steal data and carry out distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks. DDoS attacks are used to force websites offline by flooding them with traffic and overwhelming their servers with requests. Traditionally, DDoS botnets were made up of hundreds of compromised computers — the hackers would run scripts in the background to load a target website over and over without the …
